Montessori accepts variation provided that everyone respects for material, environment and other people!

 

Marvelous. The child in the picture is just 3 years old. She has learnt how to work with  the pink tower and brown stair individually for few days. I can’t believe that she can arrange these two material in order by herself without any help.

Although every material in Montessori Environment has its own purpose and has it proper way to work with. However, it doesn’t mean that it won’t allow any variations. Montessori allows children to explore the material with many different ways which follow the children’ will provide that they work with respect for each material.

經常與同業老師溝通談及Montessori教具時,他們一直有誤解認為每件教具只容許一種操作方法。

其實操作教具沒有一定規則,當然每件教具有proper way的操作方法以達至令操作者從中掌握一些概念,但若操作者已經掌握到,而他又有另外一些方法explore教具時,作為老師不會阻止他,只會從旁觀察及欣賞他^^
(當然如果他拿著教具走去打其他小朋友除外,應該不會發生)

Montessori Language – Writing

Most of the people believe that young children know how to read before write. However, in the view of Montessori, she recognised that writing precedes reading. I can’t tell whether her view is right or not. Nowadays, there are a lot of study on how to teach babies read! And it seems work!!! 

What I want to focus is on the children’ motivation on writing.

In my classroom, I found that when children age above 3.5 they love to work with the metal insets to draw shapes with color pencils. It seems that they love to write very much. 

Whereas in the traditional kindergarten which I worked children had no motivation to draw nor write.

One of the reasons I think becasue Montessori Environment allow children free to choose what they want to do. So when the children are ready to write which means they have good eye hand co-ordination and fine motor skill…… and they do it spontenously.  So don’t force children to do things when they are not ready.

Luckily, EMB has a guildlines that no writing until 4.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • The metal inset activites allow children to practice writing. Such as how to hold writing instrument, eye hand co-ordination.
  • The lines are drawn inside the triangle are from left to right which let the children practice left to right reading direction.

Montessori Parent Workshop

有鑑於家長們對蒙特梭利教學法興趣非常濃厚,Ms angie將會10月22日開始,於油麻地舉辨Montessori Teaching Method家長工作坊,因該教學法所涵蓋的範疇甚廣,我將它分為6個範疇,如下。

Freedom to work with other children

 

 I always hear that someone critiizes Montessori Teaching Method that “It doesn’t allow children work together! Which discourage their social development.” In fact, Montessori Environment where allow chidren free to work with other children if they wish. The child is free to carry out any activites with anyone as long as he is not infringing on the rights of others in the classroom.

從前,當我教學經驗尚淺時,每當提及Montessori Teaching Method時常聽到的批評是她不容許孩子一起合作活動,有礙幼兒的社交發展。批評她的人當中有不少是資歷深的校長及專上講師……

但當我研讀她的教學法後及在Montessori School 工作時,我十分欣賞她教學的原則「孩子有自由可以選擇自己想做的活動,他也可以選擇自己進行或邀請其他人與他一起工作。」

劣幣軀遂良幣

Playgroup結束營運後,又一位舊家長致電給我,跟我說現在跟孩子玩的Playgroup的老師及課程有點問題。我問:「出了什麼事?」她跟我說:「上了一課,大部份時間只是放音樂及讓孩子填顏色,再沒有其他活動。最大問題是不只一次是這情況。」我問:「你有跟Playgroup反應嗎?」她說:「有,該機構打算更換另一家Playgroup的provider,所以我將你推薦給他,他會跟你聯絡。」
當日傍晚,他真的打電話來,原來他們想搞Phonics班。但跟他深入討論後,我一口便拒決了,跟他說:「我想我不能跟你機構合作。」

首先,他說要做Phonics班,要用Letterland教,我說可以,心想太幸運,我最熟的Phonics教材便是Letterland。我問他當孩子完成課程後(假設16節課後)要學會多少個字母音及會否要求懂得拼讀技巧。他便跟我說,”學海無涯”,無雖要一定要學到什麼,但我們一定要外國人教。我跟他表示可安排外國老師任教但一班有多少個學生,他跟我說最少10個。我質疑他,10個小朋友,老師如何有時間續一聽他們發音OK與否?

他跟我說:『我們這區的家長負擔能力有限,他們只認為外國老師教便OK學下拼音對升學有幫助,其實K1-K3,學唔到什麼拼音。』
我不满地回他:『我不同意,在我Playgroup學的小朋友,學完16堂至少都識26個字母音(當中包括5個short vowel)及基本CVC拼讀技巧。』
他跟我說如果學生沒有10個跟本不能為本,我問每個學生的學費是多少?他跟我說每學生每節是$60,我們機構要分6成,我們只要外國人教便可……

他給我的感覺就像當年某校長跟我說的一席話『外藉老師就像活動廣告板一樣,我們一定要有,就算唔識教都OK。』結果,請左個唔知什麼外藉老師,整整大半年,每堂請小朋友自我介紹My name is……,註全班有20多個K1小朋友,大部份時間都是呆坐著。

最後,我拒決他的理由是以這個價錢,我請唔到外藉老師也不能保障課堂的素質。接著,我回電話給該家長道謝及跟她說幫小朋友找另一家Playgroup。如果,$60一堂能學到東西是物超所值,但若不能學到東西便是浪費時間,畢竟錢不能買回時間,由其是小朋友的時間。
